Gloria Loughman MasterClass: Landscapes with Rhythm

The sky has the potential to be the most exciting element to enhance and energise any
landscape. With its endless capacity for change, it is the most flexible compositional tool
that you can experiment with. I have found that whatever colour palette or style I choose,
when I place the sky fabric in the position of the sky in my design, it will read as sky.
Rhythm is defined as a combination of elements repeated but with variation. In this
workshop we will play with repetition and pattern, decorating our sky to add movement
and interest. So, we have permission to play.
We will begin to create our skies by overpainting some interesting commercial fabrics and
then decorate these areas with a series of repeated shapes. Once the sky is constructed and
quilted, we will add our foreground with a number of techniques for creating landforms,
areas of water, rocks, and trees outlined.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details:
Requirements: Bring photos, pictures, sketches, or other subject material relevant to the design of your quilt. The background needs to be quite simple with a big sky. You may like to make a black and white enlargement of your design but remember to choose something simple. Suitable black and white commercial fabrics which will be overpainted in class – Bring at least six ¼ metres with a variation of the amount of white in each design. One metre of white fabric which can be painted for water or other areas of the foreground. One metre of white cotton fabric for the base Fabric for foreground and trees Small amounts of fabric that can be used to decorate sky One metre of tear away stabilizer – light weight that tears away easily. Three metres of Freezer paper Two metres of 24 in wide Steam a Seam 2 Lite Fee for fabric paint - $8 Please bring: Sewing Machine in good working order, machine manual, tools and accessories including a darning foot, open toed embroidery foot and walking foot. Pencil (2B), eraser, scotch tape, black medium felt tipped marker (Sharpie) Large sheet of paper to draw out pattern. Rotary cutter, patchwork ruler, cutting board Pins Chalk marking pencil – (Sewline) Mathomat – if you have one or a stencil that has circles, triangles etc. Threads - size 40 or 50 to match background and foreground fabrics. Variegated threads work well. (I will have some variegated threads available for purchase in class) Neutral thread for the bobbin Machine needles – size 80 topstitch needles Scissors fabric and paper. Small sharp scissors, tweezers Quick unpick (seam ripper) A few two inch or one inch foam brushes, plastic water jar, plastic plate (for painting palette), Chux for cleaning up, apron Please bring 2 thin boards or something similar that you can lay out your wet fabric on to paint. I have purchased some thin boards from Bunnings that are coated in a thin layer of white plastic, like melamine. The boards are thin and light enough to easily carry. Backing and Batting - (suggested size 80 by 60 cm) Batting. Thin batting such as cotton or bamboo, works well. Backing fabric - one metre. This will allow you to use the same fabric for your backing and facings, to ensure a neat finish to the back of your quilt. Any queries please contact me - gt@glorialoughman.com
Instructor: Gloria Loughman
Instructor Bio: I live by the sea, on the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula, in Victoria, Australia. Married with three daughters and nine grandchildren, I am a trained secondary teacher having worked mainly in the literacy and special education faculties. My initiation into the world of patchwork occurred nearly 30 years ago when I was recovering from a course of chemotherapy for breast cancer. After completing some studies in design and colour as part of a Diploma of Art in 1996, I began to make my large vivid landscape quilts depicting the Australian bush. Having the opportunity to travel to many unique and fascinating parts of our continent, I am continually challenged to reproduce these images in fabric. Most of the textiles used have been hand dyed or painted and feature extensive machine embroidery. These quilts have won many major awards in Australia, Europe, Japan and the United States. My quilt ‘Kimberley Mystique’ was the winner of Australia’s most prestigious national quilting award in 2003. Travelling extensively, with my husband Tony, a very keen and talented photographer, I am never short of inspiration for my work. In more recent times, my landscapes have become more abstract as I have played with pattern and colour. My series of quilts based on buildings and other facades is a result of a love of architecture and our opportunity to travel and explore, photographing many fascinating buildings. Underlying all my work is a passion for colour and the ongoing challenge to capture light in my work. I have been teaching patchwork classes for many years and I really enjoy sharing my knowledge and skills with others. I like to challenge my students to design their own quilts but I am also happy to provide patterns for those less confident. My classes have proved to be very popular with lots of students coming back for a second or third class. I have taught extensively in Australia and in more than 20 countries overseas. My commitment to teaching was acknowledged when I received the Rajah award in 2009, which is awarded for 'an outstanding contribution to Australian quilt making.' I have had a number of solo exhibitions, including two invitations to have a gallery at the prestigious NEC Show in Birmingham, UK. I have written four books, Luminous Landscapes, Quilted Symphony, Radiant landscapes, Fabulous Facades and Vibrant Landscapes. So what began as a therapy has developed into a passion and has given me the opportunity to travel the world exhibiting my quilts, teaching classes and meeting lots of wonderful people.
